Glenn Withers is a previous President of ACOLA and of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.
He is a Professor of the University at ANU and at UNSWCanberra. He holds a First Class Honours degree from Monash University and a Masters and PHD from Harvard University, where he was a Menzies and Fulbright Scholar, and Knox Fellow.
He works on applied microeconomics, public economics, public policy and administration, population policy and cultural economics and has published books on topics ranging from conscription to the economics of the performing arts. He has published some two hundred academic journal papers and chapters. He is currently researching issues in higher education and in cyber security.
Professor Withers has chaired a number of government inquiries including Population Issues for the Hawke Government, Infrastructure Financing for the Keating Government, Micro-economic Reform for the Howard Government and Employment Programs for the Abbott Government. He was awarded an AO in 1991 for contributions to applied economics, including for development of the Australian immigration points system.
He helped found the Bureau of Labour Market Research, the Bureau of Immigration Research, the Australia and New Zealand School of Government, the Crawford School of Government, the Productivity Commission, the CEDA Council of Economic Policy and Universities Australia.
He is also currently President of the World Bank’s Global Development Learning Network, Chair of Blended Learning International and co -Managing Director of Applied Economics Pty Ltd.
