Dr Hartley, Chief Executive Officer Academy of Technology and Engineering, joined the Academy as Chief Executive Officer in 2009 and leads corporate and business strategy and implementation of strategy and policy for the Academy. She is a member of the SAGE (Science in Australia: Gender Equity) Board of Management, has served on the Board of the Crawford Fund Ltd and the ACOLA Secretariat Limited and numerous government committees and advisory bodies.
Previously she held senior positions in the Australian Government including Principal Scientific Advisor to the Department of Health and Ageing (2006-2009), and Director of the Office of Chemical Safety (2001-2006) where she led human health risk assessment of pesticides and chemicals as well as regulatory policy and environmental health policy. She oversaw regulatory compliance activities for narcotics, controlled substances, and drugs in sports and advised the Commonwealth on chemical security and counter terrorism issues.
Dr Hartley is a respected national and international leader in regulatory scientist with wide experience in leading and managing Australia’s chemical regulatory policy framework, and was Australia’s Industrial Chemical Regulator from 1997-2006. She has played a key leadership role in international harmonisation efforts in risk assessment methodology via OECD and WHO programs. During her time in government she introduced a significant program for regulation reform and implementation of best practice regulation including developing community/industry/government partnerships on chemicals safety issues. Dr Hartley has a BAppSci (RMIT) and PhD (Monash University) and previously held research and academic positions in Pharmacology (Monash University) and Public Health and Epidemiology (ANU).
