Each year, the Parliamentary Library hosts a pre-Budget lecture, inviting eminent speakers to discuss key issues that will shape Australia’s economic outlook. In association with the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA), Dennis Trewin, Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia, and Professor Barbara Howitt, Fellow of the Academy of Science will present on two such significant issues:
Changing Australian demographics—Dennis Trewin AO, was the Australian Statistician, and former head of the Australian Bureau of Statistics between July 2000 and January 2007. He has been an Electoral Commissioner and an Associate Commissioner at the Productivity Commission. He has chaired and been a member of Boards in the superannuation and university sectors and chaired several NGO Boards associated with international statistical activities.
Climate change and impact on industry and agriculture—Professor Barbara Howitt has been a panel member of the Grains Research and Development Corporation and currently chairs the National Committee for Agriculture, Fisheries and Food for the Australian Academy of Science, of which she is a Fellow. Barbara is also member of the National Science and Technology Council, which advises the Federal Government on scientific and technological issues.
