John Fitzgerald is a past President of the Australian Academy of the Humanities and Emeritus Professor in the Centre For Social Impact at Swinburne University of Technology.
Previously he directed Ford Foundation operations in Beijing and held positions including Head of the School of Social Sciences at La Trobe University and Director of the International Centre of Excellence in Asia-Pacific Studies at the ANU.
He has served as Chair of the Education Committee of DFAT’s Australia-China Council and Co-Chair of the ARC Committee for National and International Cooperation. He currently serves on the board of the National Foundation for Australia-China Relations.
His publications are widely recognised, including the Ernest Scott Prize of the Australian Historical Association and the Joseph Levenson prize of the American Association for Asian Studies.
He is a graduate of Sydney University (1977), was awarded a Ph.D. from ANU (1983), and held a Fulbright postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1988).
He was awarded Member (AM) in the General Division of The Order of Australia in the Australia Day 2020 Honours List.
