ACOLA Parliamentary Seminar

This seminar is part of a collaboration between the Parliamentary Library and the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) to bring Australia’s leading minds from Australia’s Learned Academies and other experts to important topics of interest to Parliament.

Australian research has been at the forefront of advances in neuro-technologies (such as the cochlear implant) that benefit individuals’ wellbeing and management of conditions such as deafness, Parkinson’s disease, limb loss, paralysis and epilepsy. However, the development and use of these technologies are not without health risks or ethical concerns about autonomy, agency or loss of privacy. This presentation considers some currently approved therapeutic neuro-technologies and those in development to distinguish the real and perceived ethical, regulatory and social impacts of these technologies and to consider the importance of, and opportunities in Australia for, responsible development of these technologies.

This session was a conversation led by Professor Susan Dodds.

The seminar was held on 23 August 2023 and recorded by the Parliamentary Library.
