Australia’s Mental Health Challenges & Our Health System’s Response | ACOLA Parliamentary Library Seminars
This seminar is part of a collaboration between the Parliamentary Library and the Australian Council of Learned Academies (ACOLA) to bring Australia’s leading minds from Australia’s Learned Academies and other experts to important topics of interest to Parliament.
According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), an estimated 1 in 5 Australians experience mental illness in any given year, including a range of illnesses such as anxiety disorders, affective disorders, psychotic disorders and substance use disorders.
With Australia’s health system facing challenges including broader budget pressures, workforce shortages, changing demographics and societal expectations, there are implications for the management of mental health. Through the lens of mental health, this webinar will explore complexities and considerations for Australia in ensuring a sustainable and effective health system.
This session was a conversation led by Professor Maree Teesson.
The seminar was held on 18 April 2023 and recorded by the Parliamentary Library.
